What setup is needed for a "deep blues sound"?

Postby Che » Sun Jul 11, 2010 8:10 am

Straight up you should probably know I know next to nothing about guitars!

I got a Washburn EA16 Electric/Acoustic Guitar a few years back as a present. I don't see it producing a "blues sound, so I might stick it up on eBay and get one better suited towards me following advice from some experts around here!

I've been doing a bit of digging, reading around the net, found a very helpful post from davey on another forum! Anyway, so It looks like Steves got a Rolandcube X30 Amp and a Kent Americana made by Teisco w/old Harmony 'gold foil' pickup (3 string trance wonder).

So down to the main question, for a blue guitarist, who wants that deep soul sound, what would you recommend in terms of amp/guitar? and if money was no object, what would your dream setup be?

Once again, thanks!

Hey Che,

Have you tried an open tuning on your guitar? Something Open D (D A D F# A D) sounds pretty good for the blues sound....

I don't think it really matters what you play but how you play it.

I have a real cheap Encore half size acoustic which I've put steel strings on (should have nylon strings) which was in fact my first ever guitar. Through technique and a good few years of playing (18 in fact) I manage to get a pretty good bluesy sound. And totally agree with open tunings. Open D or G are the best!

I'd go for a second hand, older guitar. New guitars tend to sound a bit "shiny" and new! (funny enough!!!) :D

I'm in the open D camp as well. One of the guitars I use is a cheap electro acoustic narrow body through a Marshall amp and a Boss Blues pedal. This gives me a valve amp sound and a rich bassy tone.

It's not Boss, it's a Behringer. I scare myself sometimes!

Che
I play blues on acoustics myself so couldn't recommend any gear. I can vouch for the advice about using open D tuning (vestopol) and about it being as much about how you play. I'm pretty sure I could pick up your semi acoustic and make it sound authentic. Personally I like a heavy string set too.
There ain't no combination of gear that'll sound "deep blues" out of the box. You gotta pull the deep blues out of the gear you got............you dig 8-)

Good luck mate
